POSITION SUMMARY

Join the Flint Center as a  Research Assistant and be involved in our exciting efforts to help Flint Kids Thrive! The Flint Center is driven by our mission of building an educational ecosystem that works for all Flint kids by providing programs, research, and advocacy that ensure Flint kids, their families, schools, and communities thrive. 

This position will be expected to work from the Flint Center office in-person 2-4 days per week. Additionally, candidates should be prepared to travel to various sites across Flint for data collection. This travel is expected to occur twice a week, depending on need. The preferred candidate would be based in Flint, MI or surrounding area.

The Flint Center for Educational Excellence is dedicated to working with the community to help Flint kids thrive. Launched with funding from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Flint Center leads and coordinates six cooperative efforts:

  • a community education initiative,
  • afterschool programming,
  • the Flint Early Childhood Collaborative,
  • a parent collaborative,
  • a community council on education and
  • a Network for School Excellence.

These programs and initiatives work together to improve academic outcomes and well-being for Flint kids. They are closely aligned to better serve students, parents, caregivers, and families.

The Flint Center is currently seeking a Research Assistant to join our team and work across all six cooperative efforts. The position offers an opportunity to gain first-hand data collection, data management and research experience on exciting evaluations of Flint Center programming.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND KEY TASKS

The responsibilities for the position include:

  • Travel to local PK-12 schools across Flint, MI to collect data (conduct classroom observations, direct child assessments, interviews, focus groups).
  • Assist the Director of Research & Evaluation to:
  1. Analyze quantitative and qualitative research data
  2. Contribute to the reporting and interpretation of findings
  3. Create data dashboards and data visualizations for a variety of audiences
  4. Support communication with schools, district leaders, and families
  5. Develop spreadsheets and data bases to support project activities
  6. Conduct literature reviews and write sections of project proposals and deliverables
  • Work on moderately complex assignments under indirect supervision

Skills:

  • Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy when writing
  • Flexible, self-motivated, able to manage multiple tasks efficiently, and team player
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite or the equivalent (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software)
  • Comfortable working independently and as a member of a team with individuals from diverse backgrounds and at all levels
  • Effective communicator in a virtual work environment

Disclosures:

The Flint Center provides competitive packages for qualified staff. Salary offers are made based on internal equity within the institution and external equity with competitive markets. Please note this is the annual salary range for candidates that are based in the United States.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social science related fields
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of data collection and analysis methodologies and techniques, such as survey design, classroom observations, direct child assessments, conducting structured interviews, or focus groups.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of K-12 schooling, early childhood education, afterschool programing, community education, and/or family engagement.
  • Experience with or inclination to learn and use software programs such as NVivo, R, SPSS, or Stata to analyze data
